I hope that the first week of 2012 has brought some good things for each one reading this article. However, I know that many of us have faced or will face challenges and difficulties of various types in the coming year. The important thing for all of us to remember is to be thankful for God’s blessings and seek His direction and help for the challenges and difficulties we face. Jesus tells us in Matthew 7:7-8, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.” Our requests need to be made in faith as Jesus also instructs in Matthew 21:22, “And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.” These scriptures and many others tell us that God is pleased when we ask for His assistance in accordance with His will. He also is pleased when we thank Him for His blessings in our lives. Many of the Psalms speak of giving thanks to God, like Psalm 69:30, “I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.” And Ephesians 5:20 instructs us to give thanks to God in the same way we petition Him, through our Lord Jesus Christ, “Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” The important thing for us to remember is to keep praying – regularly, reverently, and sincerely!

Have you thought much about the New Year beginning? I don’t know how you feel about near year’s resolutions. Personally, I have never been very effective in making or keeping them. However, I do like to think of the beginning of another year as a time of reflection and planning, especially concerning spiritual things. It is a time to reflect back on the previous year, the accomplishments as well as shortcomings we experienced. Then we can look forward praying and hoping for new and additional accomplishment opportunities and to be able to overcome things we have fallen short of in the past. If you are lost, 2012 would be a great year to get saved, actually today would be a great day to get saved. If the Lord is dealing with you, PLEASE PRAY to be saved! If the Lord is not dealing with you, PLEASE PRAY for Him to deal with and draw you so you can be saved! For those of us that are saved, are we serving the Lord and growing in His will as He desires for us to? As individuals and as a church it is beneficial for us to reflect on past experiences to learn and grow. But it is more important for us to pray and to seek and follow God’s leadership to perform and accomplish things in His service that will please Him and bring honor and glory to His name. The following is the concluding paragraph from the Missionary Baptist Literature Adult Sunday School Quarterly from the January 1, 2012 lesson titled “Looking Forward” written by Bob K. Vanderpool.

“Are the ‘New Year’s Resolutions’ meaningful or merely traditional? It is a personal question to answer. God has allotted us this time to accomplish that which He has set forth in His commands that we should follow. Our time is priceless. We are told in Revelation 1:3, “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.” John 9:4 states, “I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.” As is often said, we will not pass this way again. What we do now, not later, is of the utmost importance. We cannot redo what is done. We do not know how much time we have for the future. Therefore, let us serve Him now.”

Paul said in Philippians 3:13-14, “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” May it be our prayer, desire and effort to press toward this mark as we begin this new year!

As pastor, I am truly thankful for the many and varied efforts in which our church is engaged. There is a ladies group that meets on a regular basis and does many things which support the Lord’s work within our church and the surrounding communities. A men’s group has recently started meeting. Our hope and desire in this effort is that on a personal basis to become stronger servants of Christ. And, collectively to be able to provide assistance both spiritual and physical as we have ability within our church and communities. There are Bible studies and activities for our youth as well as regular prayer and Bible study meetings. From time to time we plan various special services and meetings to worship and praise the Lord and have fellowship together. All this is in addition to regular weekly Sunday School and Worship services, monthly business meeting, monthly services for visiting preachers and our annual revival. All this activity in service to our Lord would not be possible without the commitment of many people. I believe that our church is blessed by this activity and commitment and will be as long as it is all dedicated to the worship and praise of God. The scripture tells us in Psalms 37:4-6, “Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.” Is your walk with the Lord where you want it to be? Have you committed your ways to Him? Are there services beyond Sunday morning services to which you can contribute or from which you can benefit? Are there other efforts that the Lord wants us and His church to support? May we all prayerfully consider these questions.

Can you believe it is already the last day of February? When it seems to me that the first of the year was just a few days ago, I can really understand the meaning of the scripture from James 4:14. “For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”

James was making an important point when he asked this question about life and provided the answer about how brief the span of our human life is. He points out in the scripture just prior to the portion of verse 14 quoted above that we often say, “To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow.”

We often plan ahead or postpone doing things we ought to take care of today, especially in spiritual matters. After stating that our life is as a vapor, James tells us we ought to say, “If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.”

Then he instructs us in James 4:17, “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” This verse reminds me of a quote I heard a few years ago that I try to remember but still fail in heeding. “The least of deeds is greater that the grandest of intentions.”

I fear that my good intentions exceed my good deeds most days. As we continue through this year may we plan for the future while giving daily attention to our spiritual well being and relationship with our Heavenly Father.

“Who has believed our report?” is the thought for a message I preached recently for broadcast on the Bowling Green Insight Communication cable local access channel on which Mt. Lebanon has a weekly program. When the Lord put this thought on my heart, of course its source was the first verse of Isaiah 53, “Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?” Have you ever stopped to think and prayerfully consider these important questions?

Do you think people believe you when you tell them something? Why should they? Do you have a reputation for being honest and truthful or are you known for spinning a yarn or stretching the truth at times? Are you a person of integrity and trust or do others feel they need to “keep an eye” on you? These too are very important questions we should ask ourselves from time to time.

The prophet Isaiah was a man of integrity that spoke the truth as God revealed it to him. Isaiah said of himself after seeing a heavenly vision, “Woe is me! For I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.”, Isaiah 6:5. But after envisioning one of the angelic beings in the vision placing a live coal (of fire) on his mouth, Isaiah noted that his iniquity was taken away and his sin purged (Isaiah 6:7). Then in verse 8 when Isaiah heard the voice of the Lord ask, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Isaiah replied, “Here am I; send me.” In verse 9 the Lord told Isaiah, “Go, and tell this people, ….” This scripture confirms first that the Lord saved Isaiah, forgiving him of his sins. Second it confirms that God called Isaiah to deliver the Lord’s message to the nation of Israel. Isaiah was then a truthful and credible witness for the Lord.

Now back to the two questions of Isaiah 53:1, “Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?” Isaiah used these two questions to begin some of the clearest prophecy about the life and death of Jesus Christ as our savior. As we read Isaiah 53, we see that Isaiah spoke of the life and death of Jesus in all three tenses: future, present and past. He spoke of events as if they were to come, events as if they were occurring then, and events as if they had already happened. Isaiah could speak in this manner because of the experience he had with Jesus and it was all so real to him. He asked the questions to get the attention to get the attention of his hearers (and readers) and let them know his words came from God.

Prophets of the Old Testament told of the coming Savior and those that truly believed in His coming and atoning sacrifice were saved. The four gospels give the account of the coming of Christ, His sinless life, sacrificial death, victory over death (His resurrection) and return to the right hand of His Father in heaven. Individuals that truly from the heart believe in Christ’s atoning sacrifice, after feeling condemnation and conviction for their sins, the Lord saves.

Now I pose some more questions for the readers of this post. Do you believe Isaiah’s report and the reports of others about the coming and work of our Savior? In other words have you been saved? If not, will you consider your condition in the sight of an almighty and righteous God? Will you repent and believe, seeking Jesus with all your heart until He saves you? If you have believed; if you have been saved, have you told someone? Are you seeking the Lord’s will for your life? Are you serving the Lord of your salvation? Are you telling others about the Lord and what He did for you?

Who has believed our report? My prayer is that many will believe our report about an atoning and merciful Savior? I pray that many will listen to what “thus sayeth the Lord” in the scriptures, in sermons, in teaching, in the testimonies of God’s people. And, may those of us that the Lord has saved be more concerned about continuing to give that “report”, that is in spreading the good news of Jesus Christ, rather than worrying too much about who has believed our report. The Lord will take care of who truly believes and who does not.

In His Love,

Happy New Year to each one visiting the Mount Lebanon website. I pray that 2010 has been a good year for you and that you have enjoyed the holiday season. But 2010 with all its opportunities and accomplishments is now gone. So now my prayer is that we are looking forward with anticipation toward a healthy and prosperous 2011. My prayer is not just for physical health and material prosperity, but for our spiritual health and to be prosperous in spiritual service and blessings. May each of us that has been saved seek the Lord’s will for our individual life and service to Him. And, may each one that has not been saved diligently seek for that sweet peace that passes understanding. I encourage everyone to begin 2011 by serving God and attending His house of worship on a regular basis.

Are you saved? Do you know that peace (of God) that “passeth all understanding”. If not do you want to find that sweet peace, do you want to be saved? I pray that you do. I encourage you that if you are going to a church that preaches and teaches the truth, that you keep going and listening to the gospel and keep seeking the Lord for His saving grace. If you are not in church, seek out one that teaches that you are saved by a personal experience with God. Isaiah 55:6 teaches, “Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near.” And Hebrews 11:6 instructs, “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. “ This experience occurs after the Lord convicts you of your sins, you feel that terrible condemnation and conviction, He deals with and draws you by His Holy Spirit and you seek Him with all your heart putting your faith and trust in Jesus until He saves you by replacing that terrible feeling with sweet spiritual peace.

Are you saved? Do you know that peace (of God) that “passeth all understanding”. If so are you serving him in a true gospel church. Such a church teaches that salvation is a personal experience with God through His saving grace made possible by the atoning blood of Jesus Christ. It also teaches and observes the commandments and ordinances that the Lord Jesus taught His church to observe as He organized it as described in the four gospels; and, as its spiritual growth and development is described in the Acts of the Apostles and the epistles of the New Testament. Paul wrote in Hebrews 10:23-25, “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he (the Lord) is faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” We learn and grow spiritually by prayer, meditation, personal study, and seeking God’s will for our lives. The assembling together as the Lord’s church enhances this opportunity for spiritual learning, experience and growth. If you are saved I encourage you to serve the Lord in and through His church.

If you live in the Bowling Green area and do not have a church home we invite you to attend services at Mount Lebanon. If you are visiting in the area and looking for a place to attend we invite you to visit Mount Lebanon. Directions to the church and service times are posted on this website.

Again, I encourage everyone to begin 2011 by serving God and attending His house of worship on a regular basis.

In His Love,
After being away from Mount Lebanon for almost ten years, serving the Lord at other churches, it is both exciting and challanging to return, especially to serve as pastor. However, the Lord has let me know this is where He wants me at this time and He has never failed to lead and guide when I will seek and follow His will. So it feels good to be home!

I had the privilege to grow up in the community around Mount Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church. Mount Lebanon is the church that I was blessed to attend as a child. Much of my family is or has been members of Mount Lebanon including my parents, both grandmothers, and my maternal grandfather. I was saved at Mount Lebanon in the summer revival of 1962 and baptized into the membership of the church that year. What a wonderful year!

Like many young people of my generation, I dropped out of church to a great degree in my mid teens not really returning until the Lord showed me my need to return in my early thirties in 1984. Looking back I can still see the providence of God watching over me, even through those years when I was out of His will. What a blessing that by His mercy the Lord allowed me to get back into church and feel His leading and comforting Spirit again! What a joy to be able to feel His Spirit and have His leadership and guidance in my life again.

I was elected to serve the church as a deacon in late 1992 and ordained to that office in January 1993. In June of 1993 the Lord blessed Mount Lebanon with a wonderful revival and many souls being saved, one being my daughter and a number of her friends that spent a lot of time at our house. On June 28, 1993 (during that revival) the Lord called me to preach. It happened on my way to work on that Monday morning after several (my daughter among them) had been saved the previous Saturday night. I was blessed to serve the church as deacon for the next five years as I struggled to recognize and acknowledge this call. On June 28, 1998 I finally submitted and acknowledged this call first to my family and then in the Sunday morning service at Mount Lebanon (during the 1998 revival). I preached my first sermon on the first Sunday in July 1998 at an evening service at Mount Lebanon.

After preaching on appointment at various churches as the Lord provided opportunity, I was ordained to the full work of the ministry by Mount Lebanon in April 2000. In December 2000 I was elected as pastor to a church in Barren County, Ky, Union #2 Missionary Baptist Church located in the Nobob community. After being led of the Lord to resign as pastor of Union #2 in 2005, I was elected and served as pastor of another Barren County church, Caney Fork Missionary Baptist Churh located in the Etoile community. The Lord impressed on my heart that it was time to leave this church as pastor earlier this year. After making the Lord’s will known to Caney Fork, I was elected as pastor of Mount Lebanon. So the Lord has blessed my wife and I with the opportunity to come home for a while. We will leave the length of our service at Mount Lebanon in the Lord’s hands as we have endeavored to do in the other places He has blessed us to serve.
